New kind of theory exam questions coming up

In 2022, the CBR took more exams than ever. In total, more than 1.7 million participants took a test last year, of which about 645,000 for a practical exam. More than a million people took part in a theory exam, which is mainly due to the catch-up that the CBR made after the disappearance of the corona measures that previously limited the number of exams. From now on you can expect new questions when taking a theory test.
The Central Bureau for Driving Skills (CBR) publishes its annual report for 2022. It shows that never before have so many people taken exams in one year as last year. This is mainly because in 2022 all backlogs with regard to the theory exams that arose in 2020 and 2021 due to the corona measures were cleared. To make the elimination possible, the CBR welcomed a total of more than a million theory candidates.
For practical exams, the backlogs – of which there were about 300,000 in total – have not yet been completely cleared, but the CBR is taking measures to increase the number of exams. Examiners are postponing their retirement, more overtime is being worked and at the same time the CBR is training more examiners. Partly thanks to these efforts, the average waiting time in April 2023 for a practical exam was 16.6 weeks, where you had to wait an average of more than 22 weeks after registration a year earlier.
Exactly how many practical exams took place for a driving license is not clear. The CBR does say that a total of 595,160 exams were taken for a car, motorcycle or moped driver’s license. It was previously announced that a total of more than 223,000 people will obtain a driving license in 2023. In addition, 50,332 practical exams were taken for a bus, truck, tractor or taxi driver’s license and the CBR administered more than 109,000 interim tests.
New kind of questions for theory exam
Do you still have to take your theory exam and will it take place after May 15, 2023? Then you can expect a new kind of question. That is the so-called multiple response question, a multiple choice question where several answers are correct. Initially, testing is only done with multiple response questions, so that you are presented with them during an exam, but they do not count for your result. If the new type of questions proves to be of value, CBR will implement them as actual exam questions at a later stage.
The current prices for the various CBR exams can be found in this article.
