Big car promises small consumption

In 2007 we were introduced to the Toyota Auris, a Corolla with a more modern-looking name, according to the manufacturer. In the end, tradition turned out to be more important, so that the name Auris disappeared from the scene after two generations. What we owe to the Auris is the democratization of hybrid technology, Toyota spooned out the powertrain spaceship After all, Prius in a more common carriage and even in a practical station wagon. Based on input from drivers, we answer the question: is the Auris Hybrid really that economical?
Admittedly, you could easily forget that we have known two generations of Auris. The first generation appeared for the first time in 2010 with a ‘Full Hybrid’ powertrain. Yes, the Prius powertrain was now also available for those who did not want to flaunt their environmentally and climate-friendly – or stingy – nature. In this article we look at the second generation Auris, on the market between 2013 and 2019. Thanks to the availability of a station wagon and a low addition for business drivers, this started the hybrid journey for many.
Fuel consumption Auris Hybrid Touring Sports
We start with the consumption of the Toyota Auris Touring Sports, which is clearly the best represented with 79 of the 119 cars in the Consumption Monitor. Drivers note an average consumption of 1 to 18.6 (5.4 l/100 km). Of course there are outliers: the most economical driver drove almost 9,000 km with an average consumption of 1 to 22.4 (4.5 l / 100 km). At the bottom of the list dangles a car from 2013, the driver of which has tracked its consumption for a year and 26,851 km. That resulted in 1 in 14.7 (6.8 l/100 km).
Also interesting: who drives more economically than the magical limit of 1 in 20 (5 l/100 km)? There are 17. On the other hand, 17 drivers drive an average of 1 in 17 (5.9 l/100 km) or less economically.
Is the hatchback more economical?
Time to adjust the filter to the Auris hatchback, which on paper is only 25 kilograms lighter than the Touring Sports. Despite this small difference, hatchback drivers consume an even more favorable average of 1 to 18.9 (5.3 l/100 km). Whether this minimal difference is caused by the slightly lower weight, better streamlining or slightly calmer drivers? The fuel receipts do not answer this question.
The question of whether the Toyota Auris Hybrid is economical in practice is answered with a resounding ‘yes’. The somewhat older Auris scores much more favorable values than a younger Ford Focus and Opel Astra.
