Stellantis takes an interest in hydrogen expert Symbio

Not only Toyota and BMW are making significant progress in the field of hydrogen technology. Stellantis is also busy developing vehicles with a fuel cell on board. To power its hydrogen adventures, it is taking a major interest in Symbio.

Stellantis’ brands supply a wide range of passenger cars, but Stellantis’ portfolio is also gigantic in terms of commercial vehicles. There are not only versions with combustion engines of various commercial vehicles, but also fully electric versions. Hydrogen-electric variants of the Citroën Jumpy, Opel Vivaro and Peugeot Expert, which have already been presented in the Netherlands, will also be launched on the market. The hydrogen technology in these vans comes from Symbio, a joint venture of Michelin and supplier Faurecia. Stellantis now owns a 33.3 percent stake in the company.

Earlier this year it was announced that Stellantis would like to buy into Symbio. That is now actually happening. Symbio wants to be able to produce 50,000 fuel cells on an annual basis from 2025. In the second half of this year, a new factory will be set up in France for this purpose. By 2028, the annual production capacity of fuel cells should already be 100,000 units.

Symbio also has a partnership with Renault. It is not yet clear whether this cooperation will continue.
