Northvolt is going to build a large battery factory in Germany

Car battery manufacturer Northvolt is building a third European factory. It will be located in Germany, near the town of Heide and will probably soon produce batteries for Volkswagen, among other things.

Swedish Northvolt currently already has a battery factory in its home country where it opened the first ‘entirely European’ EV battery at the end of 2021. In addition, a battery factory will be built in Gothenburg in collaboration with Volvo. It will not stop there, because a battery factory from Northvolt will also be built in Germany. That hears Reuters from the company.

The factory is to be built in Heide, north of Hamburg. It is said to involve an investment of €3 billion to €5 billion, good for around 3,000 jobs. The factory must open its gates in 2026 and ultimately be good for a battery production of 60 GWh per year. We are now waiting for approval from the European Commission.

It will not be the first German battery factory in which Northvolt has had a hand, because Volkswagen is building a battery factory in Salzgitter in which Northvolt was involved through a joint venture with Wolfsburg. Volkswagen invested another €500 million in Northvolt’s Swedish factory in 2021 and has already ordered €14 billion worth of batteries from Northvolt. There is therefore a very good chance that the new factory in Heide will make batteries for VW, among other things.
