This year it is 25 years ago that the first Volkswagen Polo GTI came on the market. That party cannot go uncelebrated, according to Volkswagen. It is therefore introducing a special and limited 25 Year Edition of its compact hot hatch. Don’t expect too much from that though.
Despite the fact that Volkswagen already introduced a GTI version of the Golf in 1976, it would take until 1998 before the smaller Polo was also introduced to the GTI label. That GTI came to the Netherlands a year later after the introduction of the facelifted model. Sporty versions of the Polo existed before, such as the G40 of the second generation of the model, but it was not until 25 years ago that Volkswagen actually stuck the GTI badge on the back of its successful B-segmenter. To celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Polo GTI, Volkswagen is now launching a special edition: the Volkswagen Polo GTI 25 Year Edition. However, this festive edition does not have much to offer.

Same power
We have to disappoint those who had hoped for more muscle power for the special Polo GTI. The Volkswagen Polo GTI Edition, which is limited to 2,500 units, has, just like the regular Polo GTI, a 207 hp and 320 Nm strong 2.0 TSI since the facelift as a power plant, a machine that helps the car to a speed of 100 km / h in 6.5 seconds. . The rest of the technical hardware also remains unchanged. The Edition 25 also has a sports suspension that brings the Polo 1.5 centimeters closer to the asphalt than less potent versions, and the electronic and XDS-called limited slip differential is also present. Red brake calipers, chrome tailpipes, a honeycomb grille and red exterior accents? From the party. Indeed, just like the well-known Polo GTI.

What then distinguishes the Volkswagen Polo GTI Edition 25 from the regular GTI? Volkswagen puts the Polo GTI Edition 25 on special black 18-inch alloy wheels and immediately gives it the normally optional black roof and black side mirror caps. The special variant also has perforated black and red leather covered sports seats with GTI logos and glassy black panels with – you guessed it – GTI inscription. On the door sills you can read ‘One of 2500’, of course a reference to the limited edition in which the Polo GTI Edition 25 will be available. The party nose is available in all colors in which the regular Polo GTI is also available, although you can also opt for the exclusive Ascot Gray shade of grey. Volkswagen applies the number 25 to the leather-covered steering wheel.
There is not yet a Dutch price. We do know that 20 copies of the Volkswagen Polo GTI Edition 25 will come to the Netherlands.
