The electric future
Small car manufacturers such as Caterham also seem unable to escape the EV dance. The brand shows the EV Seven, an electric version of the Seven with which the brand gives away what it will do in the EV field in the coming years.
The Caterham Seven is always a classic-looking English purist, but it does not always have the same powertrain. The Seven is available in many flavors and versions and is not only available with 1.6 Sigma and 2.0 Duratec machines from Ford, but also with 660 cc small three-cylinder engines from Suzuki. The Caterham EV Seven that plays the leading role in this article has a completely different powertrain. Its name gives it away: the EV Seven is completely electric.
The Caterham EV Seven is not yet a model that will actually go into production. The English describe the EV Seven as a development concept with which the brand explores how a future electric version of the Seven could be. For the EV Seven, Caterham has teamed up with Swindon Powertrain, a company that also has the necessary experience in the EV field.
The EV Seven is based on the Seven with the largest frame and is almost literally filled to the brim of its ‘cigar shape’ with a battery pack. The EV Seven has a 51 kWh battery (40 kWh net) that provides a 252 hp and 250 Nm strong electric motor on the rear axle with zest for life. The EV Seven must be able to sprint from standstill to a speed of 100 km/h in about 4 seconds. Fast charging is possible with up to 152 kW. The EV Seven is not a heavyweight by the way. According to Caterham, it weighs just under 700 kilograms and is therefore only about 70 kilograms heavier than a conventionally powered Seven. “We’re never going to make a Caterham that weighs a ton,” promises CEO Bob Laishley.
Caterham does not say how far the EV Seven will get on a full battery. However, you must be able to stomp around with it for at least 20 minutes on the circuit, after which a charging session of 15 minutes is sufficient to be able to celebrate for another 20 minutes. More technical information: The EV Seven has a limited-slip differential and adjustable Bilstein dampers.
