Mitsubishi Spacestar

The Mitsubishi Space Star has been known for a while as the cheapest new car you can buy in the Netherlands. It is rising in price for the second time this year, but remains the cheapest option for those in the market for a new passenger car.

The Mitsubishi Space Star has long been the cheapest new passenger car that you can buy in the Netherlands. In February this year, prices of the Space Star went up by €500 across the board, but the aging Japanese retained its title as the cheapest new car in the Netherlands. The Mitsubishi Space Star is now €500 more expensive again and again nothing changes in its status.

Until recently, the Mitsubishi Space Star was on the Dutch price list from €16,490. Without Mitsubishi itself publicizing it, the prices of the Space Star will increase across the board, just like in February this year, by €500 again. That gives him a new starting price of €16,990 in Entry version. This means that the Space Star remains the cheapest new car in our country. It stays ahead of the Fiat Panda (from €17,190), Kia Picanto (from €17,245) and Hyundai i10 (from €17,595).

Regardless of the chosen version, the Space Star has a 1.2 three-cylinder engine that produces 71 hp and 102 Nm. If desired, it can be ordered with a manual five-speed gearbox, or with a CVT. With the manual version, you can reach a speed of 100 km/h from standstill in 14.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 167 km/h. The Space Star with CVT needs 15.8 seconds for the 0-100 sprint and has a top speed of 163 km/h. The variant with manual gearbox consumes 4.9-5.0 l/100 km, the CVT scores 5.3-5.5 l/100 km.

Equipment

The Mitsubishi Space Star has 14-inch steel wheels with hubcaps as Entry, a light and rain sensor, power front windows and electrically adjustable exterior mirrors. The Connect + adds air conditioning, a start / stop system, central door locking with remote control, a DAB + radio with 7-inch screen, audio controls on the steering wheel, a USB connection and a rear spoiler. This variant also has lighting in the luggage compartment and a parcel shelf. From the Dynamic you get 14-inch light metal, electrically heated exterior mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, privacy glass, nicer interior trim, cruise control, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, LED rear lights, automatic climate control and a reversing camera. The most expensive in the range, the Instyle – only available with a CVT – offers 15-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, heated seats, an auto-dimming interior mirror, a driver’s seat armrest and keyless entry.

Competitors

The Fiat Panda has a starting price of €17,190 and is therefore only €200 more expensive than the Mitsubishi Space Star. The entry-level Panda offers a 70 hp and 92 Nm strong 1.0 three-cylinder and immediately has a six-speed gearbox. It has 100 km / h in 13.9 seconds on the clock a little earlier than the Space Star. Unlike the Space Star Entry, the nameless basic version does have air conditioning and central door locking with remote control, but again no electrically adjustable exterior mirrors.

Kia’s compact price packer Picanto is in the order books from €17,245 and has a 67 hp and 96 Nm strong 1.0 three-cylinder 1.0 three-cylinder in basic trim ComfortLine that is linked to a manual five-speed gearbox. Just like the Panda, the small Kia has air conditioning as standard and offers Bluetooth connectivity, a DAB + radio and central door locking with remote control. Cruise control is here from the outset. The Hyundai i10, which costs at least €17,595, has the same 1.0 i-Drive as the Picanto as a basic version. The standard equipment more or less corresponds to that of its group colleague.

Conclusion? The Space Star is the cheapest option purely in terms of purchase, but lacks standard cruise control or air conditioning, unlike its slightly more expensive competitors in basic trim. If you want a Mitsubishi Space Star that does offer those options, then you have to rely on the €18,990 Connect +, which is more expensive than the entry-level models of the Panda, i10 and Picanto, which are equipped almost similarly to the Instyle +.
