That’s how long these seven cars lasted

With a long career you think of models such as the Mercedes G-class, the Land Rover Defender and perhaps also the Renault 4 that we presented to you yesterday in Klokje Rond Klassiek. How about these seven stubborn perseverances?

Morgan 4/4 (1955-2019)

The original 4/4 dates from 1936, but since 1955 it has kept practically the same appearance for almost seventy years. Only under the hood did something change every now and then; the first 4/4 had a 1.3 Ford four-cylinder, the last a 1.6.

Volkswagen Beetle (1938-2003)

Just like the Mini and the 2CV, an iconic and successful design that was difficult to say goodbye to – which almost cost Volkswagen its head because there was no successor. The Gulf eventually took on that role, but the Beetle rumbled on in Mexico until 2003.

Hindustan Ambassador (1956-2014)

The car of India is based on the British Morris Oxford and has undergone all kinds of facelifts and subcutaneous updates during its long career to keep up with the times.

Hindustani Ambassador

Lada Niva (1977–present)

The Russian Land Rover – indestructible. A simple bodywork and ditto technology. It now comes in two flavors: the Niva Legend (the evolved archetype) and the more modern Niva Travel, a legacy of the partnership between Lada and General Motors.

Lada Niva Legend

Citroen 2CV (1948-1990)

Originally intended to transport French farmers dry and comfortably, the Duck (or in Belgium: Goat) grew into a cult car, which has never really received a worthy successor.

Mini (1959-2000)

The size and comfort were actually long outdated, but purely on appearance, the Mini lasted in almost unchanged form from 1959 to 2000, when the New Mini proved to be a worthy successor.

Volkswagen Golf (1974-2009)

Although the first Golf was replaced by the Golf II in 1983, the model (including the necessary interim updates) ran in South Africa as the Citi Golf until 2009.
