Another new battery factory from Hyundai and Kia in the US

Hyundai Motor Group is going to build a battery factory in the United States together with LG Energy Solutions (LGES). It is not the first battery factory that Hyundai, Kia and Genesis will operate in the United States and certainly will not be the last.

Recently Hyundai Motor Group announced that it will build a factory in the United States together with the Korean SK On where it will produce battery cells. Now the parent company of Hyundai, Kia and Genesis reports that it will also set up a battery factory in the United States together with LG Energy Solutions (LGES).

Hyundai Motor Group and LG each have a 50 percent share in the project and are investing a total of over €4 billion in the plant. The plant will be located near the Hyundai Motor Metaplant America, which is currently under construction in the state of Georgia. The factory – with an annual production capacity of 30 GWh – should be operational around the end of 2025. LG will soon have seven battery factories specifically for the North American market.

Hyundai Avante LPI Hybrid

Hyundai’s hybrid Avante with LG battery pack.

Fun fact: LG and Hyundai have known each other very well for years. In 2009, Hyundai introduced a hybrid version based on the Elantra/Avante, which was not available in the Netherlands, with a small LG battery pack on board. That was not just a hybrid, but one with a petrol engine on board that could also handle LPG.
