One more shift
VDL Nedcar has been the scene of various strikes for several weeks now and now there is even more bad news. VDL Nedcar is forced to make significant cuts in the workforce and is cutting almost half of all jobs as of November.
To date, VDL Nedcar has not been able to find a new client for when the deal with the BMW Group expires in March next year. The latest extension of the BMW deal will be entered into by VDL Nedcar with fewer employees. The company reports on Thursday that as of November 1 there is only one work shift of 2,100 people. Currently 3,950 people work at VDL Nedcar, as of 1 November it will stop for roughly 1,000 permanent employees and 800 temporary employees.
A considerable contraction, which is obviously painful in the first place for the employees concerned. VDL Nedcar director John van Soerland also says he is disappointed. “After the cancellation of the contract until 2030 by BMW, we fought incredibly hard for the right connection through car production. We have not been able to do that so far. In the end, due to turbulent conditions in the car market, time proved too short to keep the entire population at work. We are disappointed about this and we are sorry to our employees who are going to lose their jobs.”
VDL Nedcar wants to inform the employees who are no longer needed as of 1 November as soon as possible and to help as much as possible to find a new job. Otherwise, as a safety net, there is a social plan that has been agreed in 2021 and a bonus of up to €7,500 per employee has also been promised. There has been a lot of discussion recently about that social plan. This applies until April 2024, but employees and trade unions want this to be reviewed and have enforced this several times recently with strikes (whether or not supported by unions). Work in the car factory near Born will also come to a halt on Thursday.
