Still screens

DS imagines what the interior of the (not so distant) future will look like. With the design study called ‘Mi 21 Manifesto’, it takes a special path, although DS does not remain completely true to its own goals.
DS designer Thierry Métroz made the striking statement a year ago that DS’s goal is to eventually ban all screens from its interiors. “That creates a big challenge, because we have to provide the driver with information in one way or another,” he said at the time. In any case, that has not yet succeeded with the new design study shown here, which bears the special name Mi 21 Manifesto. In this ‘DS interior of the year 2030’ we will certainly still find screens.
‘Innovative projection’
However, it turns out that they were not empty words. In the strong and slightly curved panel across the entire width of the dashboard, you seem to see an immense screen, but according to DS it is not. It is a panel on which a projection can be seen ‘in an innovative way’. So it’s not a screen pure sang.

If you turn off the projection, according to DS, an elegant panel remains that provides a glimpse into the ‘materials behind it’. DS hereby reiterates its anti-screen stance: “The race for the largest screen or number of screens is a strong trend across all manufacturers, but once switched off these screens have no real aesthetic value. The idea is to find technology that delivers the expected information without sacrificing quality and sensory appeal.” What DS shows with the Mi 21 Manifesto is such a possible solution.
Three more screens
As mentioned, DS cannot avoid adding more conventional touch-sensitive screens to operate functions and display information. For example, there are screens in the far corners of the dashboard on both sides that show the image from the digital side mirror, but it also appears to offer the option of manually calling up and adjusting the climate control. Furthermore, things can be operated mainly with the voice or with the glass panel protruding from the center armrest.

Then where is that third screen? Well, the special steering wheel contains a digital set of instruments. So that works, in bends reading it may be somewhat of a challenge. Also special is the row of touch-sensitive keys to the left of the driver for operating the windows and the door lock.
DS emphasizes that this is a manifesto and not the interior of a concept car. That does not mean that parts of this cannot return in future production models. In any case, the tone has already been set for the future of DS interiors.
