Solid German

In Germany in the early 1950s, there was slowly some room for luxury again. This Mercedes-Benz 220 Cabriolet is a wonderful example of how something beautiful could emerge from a country that was still suffering from the consequences of the war.
This beautiful Mercedes-Benz 220 Cabriolet dates from 1954 and therefore rolled off the production line almost ten years after the end of the Second World War. The model itself was already on the market in 1951 and you can imagine that such a dignified open Mercedes-Benz at the time still formed a nice contrast to how Germany was doing as a country. Not to mention its even more opulent brother, the 300, and of course sporty top model 300 SL ‘Gullwing’.
Yet there were still hints of modesty to be discovered. The 220 (W187), together with its big brother 300 (W186), which appeared at the same time, was the first Mercedes-Benz after the war to have more than four cylinders. Its beating heart was, as the name implied, a 2.2 with six cylinders and the 300 had a 3.0. Modest? Yes, if you consider that the predecessor of the 220 (the W142) had a 3.2-liter six-cylinder and the predecessor of the 300 (the 770) even had a 7.7-liter eight-in-line! Moreover, the 220 in particular was a fairly classic-looking car for its time with clearly still lines from the late 1930s and 1940s.
Where the 220 Limousine actually even had a relatively old-fashioned appearance and the Cabriolet ‘B’ was not so strikingly lined, there were the Coupé and Cabriolet ‘A’ for those who wanted a little more charisma. Like the Coupé, the Cabriolet A had side screens extending further back and a slightly sloping roof than the Cabriolet B.
The specimen spotted by HarmenA is such an ‘A’. Although the B is even rarer, this open 220 was already very rare new. Only barely 1,300 were made and in the past 68 years many of them have undoubtedly fallen.

So we really have a special spot here. It is also a copy to get through a ring, although that is soon the case if about 220 still appear in public. According to the license plate data, the 220 has already come this way in its year of manufacture and has been delighting its current owner for over eight years now. In any case, in addition to a beautiful classic, he also has money in his hands: a handsome 220 Cabriolet A just yields €150,000.
