Ford Fiesta XR2i (1992) – Enthusiast Wanted

With the end of the Ford Fiesta in sight, we sometimes let our thoughts go over striking Fiestas from the past. Also today, because look at what a nice XR2i is for sale!

The third generation of the Ford Fiesta has already disappeared from the streets and certainly the high-profile versions are few and far between. For example, find another Fiesta RS Turbo, the sporty top model until 1992. If you already see one for sale, you can probably bring a nice penny to get your hands on the keys. In that respect, this Fiesta XR2i is a perfect alternative. Also a smooth Fiesta with an appearance that is very reminiscent of that of the RS Turbo, but for much less money.

This nice and – as you would expect – bright red XR2i is for sale for €4,999 and that is honestly not a bad price at all. It looks like you get a pretty nice copy with less than a ton on the counter. Whether that position is correct is, given the five-digit counter, a bit more exciting than usual, but the optical condition of the car certainly fits well. The fact that the car is still red and has not discolored or become dull, also speaks in its favor.

Ford Fiesta

Ford Fiesta 1.6 XR2i.

So yes, it looks good, but what does such an XR2i have to offer? In its nose is a 104 hp 1.6 that helps it from 0 to 100 km / h in about 10 seconds. Not spectacular by today’s standards, but nice and fast at the time. In the year of construction of this copy, a new XR2i took over. It had a 1.8 sixteen-valve engine that, with 131 hp, enabled almost the same performance as the RS Turbo. The RS Turbo therefore cleared the field and so (here in the Netherlands) the updated XR2i became the top version. With this you sped from 0 to 100 km / h in 8.5 seconds and reached 200 km / h.

Although this XR2i is just a little less smooth, you do have many external extras that the RS Turbo also had at the time. With its thicker bumpers, side skirts, wheel arch extensions, spotlights in the front bumper and the roof spoiler, it is a much smoother appearance than the regular Fiesta’s Mk3. Yes, it all looks very dated by now, but isn’t that exactly the charm? Dust off a nice old cassette tape with 90s music, put it in the original cassette radio and go somewhere nice to grab some dike roads. Sounds like a wonderful Friday night, right? Would you give almost 5 grand for it?
