Thirteen years after the retirement of the Maserati MC12 GT1, the Italians are back with a racing car for the GT class: the Maserati GT2, a racer based on the MC20. Today, the brand pulled the curtain off the car ahead of the 24 Hours of Spa Francorchamps.

Maserati is one of the classic sports car brands and therefore certainly not unfamiliar with racing, but the Italians have produced few race cars in recent decades. Between 2005 and 2010, the Maserati MC12 competed for the GT1 touring car championship trophy, but 37 years preceded that without a Maserati racing car.

Even after the retirement of the MC12 in 2010, another long race car-free period would follow, but it now appears that it is nowhere near 37 years. Thirteen years later, the brand today presents the Maserati GT2: a racer based on the Maserati MC20 – for sale to private teams and hobby racers – which will make its debut in the European Fanatec GT2 championship later this year.

Maserati is not yet releasing many details about the car, which was presented today in Spa, ahead of the 24-hour race there (in addition to Le Mans Classic, the Spa 24 Hours will also take place this weekend). The brand reports that the car’s Nettuno V6 has been taken ‘to the next level’, while the body has been fitted with extra airflow openings and the necessary spoiler work – as befits a GT racer.

The new Maserati GT2 is not Maserati’s only contemporary racing car: the brand is also active in Formula E. However, it is not with a self-developed car, so that with this GT2 we can indeed speak of the first Maserati racing car in years.

Is it as beautiful or less beautiful than the street version of the Maserati MC20?
