Speed 400 resounding success in India

At the end of last month it was finally time, after more than 10 years of waiting and having been spotted in the wild several times over the years in different versions, Triumph released the long-awaited single-cylinder entry-level model – intended for the A2 market in Europe and in Asia as an affordable premium model – presented.

It even turned out to be two different models: the Speed 400 and the Scrambler 400 X, powered by a completely newly developed 398cc four-valve single-cylinder in consultation with Bajaj Auto, good for a peak power of 39.5 hp at 8,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 37.5 Nm @ 6,500 rpm.

The difference between the two? The Speed as a roadster for the street and the Scrambler to also go off road. The same engine with ride-by-wire throttle control and switchable traction control, and the same frame, but with larger (spoke) wheels and longer suspension travel and different brakes with switchable ABS for the Scrambler.

Following the unveiling last month, both models could be ordered from Triumph India’s website from July 7 in India, where the engines will be marketed first, Europe will follow later this year, and which have reservations with Triumph and Bajaj Auto exceeded all expectations.

The first available Speed 400 was available in India for the attractive price of Rs. 233,000 (approx. €2,525) on the market, with an even more attractive introductory price of Rs. 223,000 (approximately €2,415) for the first 10,000 customers, and that number was reached within a week.

“We are excited about the overwhelming response we received after the launch,” Rakesh Sharma, executive director of Bajaj Auto, told India’s Hidustan Times. “A pre-order of 10,000 bikes in such a short time is unprecedented and a testament to the unwavering trust motorcyclists have in Bajaj Auto and Triumph Motorcycles.”

To meet the high demand, Baja Auto is now looking at whether production can be increased. The Speed 400 is scheduled for July in India, the Scrambler 400 X for October, both models will make their debut in Europe at the end of this year.
