Prepare for scarcity

According to Stellantis, the next chip shortage may already be lurking and that could again disrupt car production. To prevent this, Stellantis is taking a number of measures.
The chip shortage that has been bothering the car industry since 2020 is not yet well and broadly over, or Stellantis is already fearing the next shortage. The Franco-Italian-American mega concern takes into account that much-needed microchips will become scarce again in the near future become. The chief buyer for Stellantis, Joachim Kahmann, warns Bloomberg that the demand for microchips will grow particularly fast in the coming years due to the enormous increase in software functions in cars.
In order to be prepared for this, Stellantis is establishing long-term deals with various chip suppliers. We are working on security of supply with Infineon, NXP, Onsemi and Qualcomm, among others. Stellantis will buy €10 billion worth of microchips until 2030. This concerns Silicon Carbide ‘MOSFET’ chips, Microcontroller Units (MCU) and SoC chips. The group will also develop chips for its own production together with aiMotive and SiliconAuto. If shortages do occur, Stellantis says it is prepared to delay production as little as possible. The lack of one chip should no longer be able to stop a production line. Finally, Stellantis is also working to reduce dependence on Chinese and Taiwanese chip manufacturers, as their chip supply is highly sensitive to geopolitical issues.
