Omoda 5 EV: up to 450 kilometers electric, early 2024 in the Netherlands

In 2024, yet another new Chinese brand will land in the Netherlands for our new Chinese brand: Omoda. In June, Omoda already indicated that it wanted to spread its wings to the Netherlands with an electric crossover: the Omoda 5 EV. How are things now? And what exactly can the Omoda 5 EV do?

Chery joins the list of Chinese car manufacturers and brands that want to sell their electric models in Europe. The name Omoda used in China for a model line becomes a brand in Europe. You can count on it coming to the Netherlands. At the beginning of June, Omoda introduced itself to the European consumer, but was not exactly generous with information. Among other things, we now have a more concrete introduction date. The Omoda 5 EV must be in the Netherlands in the first quarter of 2024, the manufacturer confirms to AutoWeek.

The Netherlands is not the first country where Omoda has settled. Spain and Italy are ahead of us this year. The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg will follow in the first quarter of next year. By the end of 2024, Omoda wants to be present in at least nine European countries. Initially, a spokesperson could not tell us through which dealer network Omoda will carry its goods in the Netherlands. Even now that is not yet clear, although the manufacturer says that it is now in contact with more than twenty dealer groups, including “a number of dealer groups of the highest level”. Which they are remains unclear, although you could easily think of the names Hedin and Van Mossel.

The Omoda 5 EV is drawn according to a design language called Dynamic Light. According to Omoda – whose ‘O’ for oxygen state and ‘Moda’ stands for ‘modern’ – does that design style match the preferences of the target buyer group. Omoda emphatically does not present itself as a budget brand, but aims at “a new generation of young people with a middle or high income”. It is not yet clear what the car will cost in the Netherlands. According to the company, a basic starting price has not yet been determined. Omoda also acknowledges that they are certainly not early in entering the European market. A whole range of Chinese brands – from MG, Aiways, Hongqi, Seres and Jac to Xpeng, Nio, BYD, HiPhi, Zeekr, Ora, Wey and Lynk & Co – preceded the brand. “There is no denying that we are later than other Chinese brands, but we have had enough time to prepare for a European market launch,” says Omoda, who is brimming with confidence. “Our EV will therefore certainly offer advantages over those of other Chinese manufacturers.”

The Omoda 5 EV is the electric ‘5’ that exists with combustion engines. In China, that EV has a 51 kWh battery and a 224 hp electric motor. Omoda says the range is about 450 kilometers. In Europe, the Omoda 5 EV gets two 12.3-inch curved displays behind the steering wheel, V2L technology and 17 passive and active safety systems. In December last year, the Omoda 5 – with a petrol engine admittedly – scored the full five stars during the famous Euro NCAP safety tests. The Chinese say they will come later with other electric crossovers and SUVs in the B and C segment.

Omoda worldwide

Omoda says it has now exported 70,821 cars from China to other countries in the first half of 2023. Chery wants to sell 200,000 Omodas outside China annually in the long term. In Europe, the brand has only just arrived, but it is already active in Mexico, Turkey, Israel, Australia and Malaysia. In June, the first shipload of Omodas arrived in Las Palmas, Spain.
