BYD Seal U: electric SUV with 500 kilometers range to Europe

BYD is going like a rocket. Their European delivery range will be supplemented at the end of this year with the new Seal U. This is an electric SUV with which the Chinese brand hopes to have an answer to the Skoda Enyaq iV and Volkswagen ID4.

BYD started its European EV adventure with the Han and the Tang and later completed it with the Atto 3. This year the already unveiled Dolphin and Seal will be added. But there is more in the barrel. By the end of this year, BYD will complete its European model range with a new larger SUV: the Seal U.

The BYD Seal U is a new electric SUV coming to Europe in the fourth quarter of this year. Just like the Dophin, Seal and the Seagull, which is not (yet) available in Europe, it is a model of BYD’s ‘Ocean’ model line. More specifically: the Seal U is hung on the coat rack of the electric sedan Seal. From the front it shows quite a few similarities. Put online too early by the Belgian department of BYD but now deleted press release we already got some information from the car.

BYD describes the Seal U – a thoroughly modernized electric Song Plus of the Dynasty family – as a D-segment SUV. It will be on the market in the fourth quarter and should reach the European mainland in the Design and Comfort versions. BYD specifies a range of up to 500 kilometers for the Design version. Thanks to the German Automobilwoche, among others, we can already tell you a bit more. The BYD Seal U is 4.78 meters long and is therefore about 14 centimeters longer than, say, a Skoda Enyaq iV. The wheelbase is 2.92 meters. The luggage space of the Seal U measures a generous 570 liters and you can increase it with the rear seat flat to about 1,450 liters. Like other BYDs – think the Atto 3, Seal and Dolphin – the Seal U has a large rotatable infotainment screen that in this case has a diagonal of 15.6 inches.

The SUV is on the platform of the Seal-without-U and would have a 71.8-kWh battery in Comfort gear. The higher-positioned Design version has an 87-kWh battery pack. The latter is the aforementioned version with a range of 500 kilometers. The BYD Seal U Comfort with the smaller battery pack should travel up to 420 kilometers on a full battery. The Design variant can charge up to 140 kW fast, with the Comfort you have to settle for a charging capacity of 115 kW. Regardless of the chosen battery pack, you get a 218 hp electric motor on the front axle, good for a 0-100 sprint in almost 10 seconds and a top speed of 175 km / h.
