Most of the systems that should protect you in a car accident are now located around the car seat instead of inside it. A Chinese company has a slightly different vision and is working on a car seat that integrates everything to protect you.
Airbags and seat belts are now mainly around the car seat instead of in the seat, but the Chinese Yanfeng wants to change that. That still young company says it is working on a car seat that does the heavy lifting itself in the event of an accident. It shares one sketch of what it will look like if you’re in a car accident, but luckily they also explain what else happens besides the inflation of a special airbag.
Not only does an airbag pop up that kind of grabs you by the throat to protect your side, neck, chest and forehead, but a small airbag also pops up from the seat. This should ensure that your lower body does not slide off the seat if you have a frontal collision. Furthermore, the belts are only attached to the seat instead of the car. According to Yanfeng, this should contribute to a more fixed position of the occupant during an accident. The seat is ‘smart’ and can, for example, by means of the car’s ADAS systems, optimally adjust the seating position in the blink of an eye if a collision is imminent. If you normally sit back a bit, the seat ensures that you sit upright and, of course, that you are always constricted extra tightly before the collision.
According to Yanfeng, which is controlled from Shanghai but has its car seat development center in Silicon Valley, this seat is approved and ready for use by car manufacturers. Who knows, we may see this somewhere sooner or later.
