Practical consumption BMW 2-series Tourer: the most responsible BMW?

From BMW, for enthusiasts… of low consumption?

Practical consumption BMW 2-series Tourer: the most responsible BMW?Enthusiasts’ hearts will not beat faster from the BMW 2-series Active and Gran Tourer, we dare to say that. Nevertheless, the car is quite successful as a practical means of transport with very decent driving characteristics. But is he also a bit frugal? We find this out using the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor.

Yes, with the 2-series Active Tourer, BMW knocked down a lot of sacred cows in 2013. A BMW van with a three-cylinder … and to top it all off, even front-wheel drive. This makes it the first front-wheel drive BMW in history. The Tourer was ridiculed and ridiculed, especially when the extra-large Gran Tourer with optional seven seats appeared. Despite the noises of enthusiasts, the consumer decided in favor of the model. More than 17,000 have now been sold in the Netherlands and the Active Tourer just got a successor in 2021. Not the Gran Tourer, by the way.

Enough about model politics, let’s look at practical consumption here. To begin with, that of the BMW 218i Tourer, in which we find the aforementioned 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol engine. This is also known from various Mini models. On average, owners drive the 218i Tourer 1 at 14.6 (6.9 l/100 km). The most economical value, 1 in 16.9 (5.9 l/100 km), is achieved by an Active Tourer from 2018. For the most unfavorable value, 1 in 13.1 (7.6 l/100 km), a copy from 2014 responsible. The owner of this tracked the consumption over a distance of 106,600 kilometers.

We have too little data available for a firm conclusion about the larger BMW 218i Gran Tourer, but the two Tourers with ‘dormer’ belong with 1 to 13.2 (7.6 l/100 km) and 1 to 13.5 (7 .4 l/100 km) to the less economical 218i Tourers.

We are also not overflowing with data from the stronger four-cylinder 220i Active Tourer, but with an average of 1 in 14 (7.2 l/100 km), the additional consumption of this two-liter seems modest. Especially when you consider that this engine does not deliver 136, but 192 hp.

What do the 216d and 218d consume?

With the diesels we also find a three-cylinder, namely with the 214d and 216d. We have no figures for the first variant, but fortunately there are those for the 116 hp 216d. Below the line is a consumption of 1 to 18.1 (5.5 l/100 km). The most economical driver achieved 1 in 19.6 (5.1 l/100 km), the less economical driver covered a substantial distance with an average of 1 in 18.9 (5.3 l/100 km).

The four-cylinder 218d with 150 hp comes out at a slightly higher average of 1 in 17.6 (5.7 l/100 km). Here the tire width varies from 1 in 16.2 (6.2 l/100 km) to 1 in 18.6 (5.4 l/100 km). Anyone who claims that the first value was determined on the basis of a too small number of refuelings is somewhat right, we also prefer to look at the 145,640 kilometers of the second most economical 218d Active Tourer. This averaged 1 to 16.7 (6 l/100 km).

2 Series Tourer an economical choice?

With an average consumption of 1 to 14.6 (6.9 l/100 km), the BMW 218i Active Tourer scores excellent consumption. It is in line with a competitor such as the Citroën C4 SpaceTourer with 1.2-liter three-cylinder, which consumes an average of 1 to 14.3 (7l/100 km) in practice. Citroën puts a slightly wider carriage in front of that. If you go for a 2-series Tourer with diesel, it is interesting to know that the four-cylinder consumes hardly more than the three-cylinder.
