The most popular electric cars in the Netherlands – July 2023

More than one in four new passenger cars registered in the Netherlands in July are fully electric. Not the Tesla Model Y, but the Skoda Enyaq iV was the electric car of which most new copies were registered last month. This and more is evident from figures that AutoWeek has requested from the RAI Association.
In the whole of July, 28,687 new passenger cars were registered in the Netherlands. Of course, the majority of them still have a petrol engine on board, but 7,552 of those nearly 29,000 new passenger cars had an electric powertrain. This means that more than one in four (26.3 percent) of the new passenger cars registered in our country in July was an EV. Although the Tesla Model Y is again high in the Top 10 of most registered new electric cars in the Netherlands, the car did not lead the EV last month.
1. Skoda Enyaq iV
The Skoda Enyaq iV can call itself the electric car of which most copies received a license plate in July. There are 744 copies registered. It was therefore also the Skoda of which most copies went to the RDW. The Octavia was the most popular Skoda after the Enyaq iV, but with 353 units, not half as many copies were registered as the Enyaq iV. Over the first seven months of this year, the registration counter of the Skoda Enyaq iV stands at 2,902 units.

2. Tesla Model Y
In June, the Tesla Model Y was still the leader in EV registrations. In July, the popular EV finished a considerable distance behind the Skoda Enyaq iV. 521 copies were registered in July. The annual total to date stands at 7,281 copies. The Model Y is therefore well on its way to winning the title of ‘most popular electric car in the Netherlands’ at the end of this year. The Tesla Model 3, which was running particularly fast before the arrival of the Model Y, lags behind the Model Y with 224 units registered in July (Jan-July: 2,355 units). The Tesla Model S and Model X play in July, respectively. seven and five registrations a role in the margins.

3. Kia Niro EV
The electric variant of the Kia Niro managed to enter the Top 10 most popular EVs in July. The Kia Niro EV is quite close to the Model Y with 505 registrations. In total, 690 Kia Niro were registered in July. That means that roughly three quarters of all those Niro’s were an electric Niro EV. In the first seven months of this year, 2,230 electric Kia Niro’s were registered. That means that of all Niros registered this year (4,006 units), just under 56 percent had an electric powertrain.

4.Peugeot e-208
It is inevitable that the electric version of the ever-popular Peugeot 208 will also appear in the Top 10 of the most popular electric cars in July. There were 692 Peugeot 208 registered in July. Of these, 466 were an electric Peugeot e-208. So more than two-thirds (67 percent) of all 208s registered in July were e-208s. If we look at the first seven months of this year, we see that 6,538 new 208s were delivered in the Netherlands. Of these, 4,042 were an electric e-208. More than sixty percent.
An indispensable part of the Dutch sales statistics.
5.Volkswagen ID4
The Volkswagen ID4 remains well ahead of the ID3 in July. Where only 168 units of the Volkswagen ID3 were registered in June, the ID4 made it to 339 registrations. So more than twice as much. Don’t be surprised if the ID3 returns in the Top 10 in the coming months when the facelifted variant becomes available in more versions. In the first seven months of this year, the ID4 is also ahead of its smaller ID brother with 2,584 registrations. The ID3 remains at 2,116 units and now has to tolerate the Golf in Volkswagen’s sales statistics (2,177 units). The more dynamically designed sister model of the ID4, the ID5, has only 23 registrations in July and 407 registrations in the first seven months of this year. The ID Buzz kicks it up to 250 units so far (July: 40 units).

6.Peugeot e-2008
Indeed, the Peugeot 2008 with electric powertrain also claims a place in this Top 10. Of the 433 new 2008s registered in July, 310 were electric e-2008s. So almost 72 percent. More electric e-2008s have been registered than Peugeots 308 (156 units), 3008 (184 units), 408 (45 units), 5008 (145 units) or 508 (23 units).
The facelifted Peugeot e-2008 still has to get used to daylight.
7.Hyundai Ioniq 5
The only electric Hyundai in this list is the Ioniq 5. What about the long-popular electric Kona? It will probably return in a monthly EV ranking this year, but the electric version of the new Kona is not yet available. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 reached 280 registrations in July, making it the most registered Hyundai after the i10 (587 units) and the Tucson (342 units). In the first seven months of this year, the registration counter of the Ioniq 5 stands at 1,657 units. The even more daring Hyundai Ioniq 6 does not yet match the success of the Ioniq 5. The Ioniq 5 stalled at 58 registrations in July and stands at 599 units over the first seven months of this year.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 was part of our endurance test fleet.
8.Kia EV6
The second Kia in the list of most popular electric cars is the EV6. In July, with 268 units, slightly fewer units were registered than the technical brother Hyundai Ioniq 5. More EV6s were sold than new Ceeds (268 units), Proceeds (32 units), Rios (39 units), Sorentos (41 pieces), Souls (5 pieces), Stonics (259 pieces) and Xeeds (47 pieces). The registration counter of the Kia EV6 after the first seven months of this year stands at 1,682 copies. On an annual basis, the Kia EV6 remains just ahead of its Ioniq brother.
The Kia EV6 lags just behind the Ioniq 5 in July. Not on an annual basis.
9.BMW i4
BMW closes this Top 10 with two models. The highest positioned electric BMW is the i4, of which 245 units were registered in June and 1,864 units in the first seven months of this year. Other electric BMWs logically do less well. For example, the i7 with 17 cars registered in July, the iX (51 units) and the iX3 (103 units) lag considerably behind. The only one that comes close is…

10.BMW iX1
…the BMW iX1. The electric variant of the X1 kicked it up to 229 registrations in July. The X1 with combustion engines performed significantly less well with 80 registrations in the same month.

And the rest?
The Opel Corsa Electric, like the electric Volvo XC40 and Polestar 2 (154 units), shines due to its absence from the list of most popular electric cars in July. The Audi Q4 e-tron also failed to enter the Top 10 with 165 registrations. The Q8 e-tron came closer to a place in the ranking with 175 pieces, but also misses the boat. The stubbornly lined Citroën C4 X was good for 69 units delivered in July and its year counter stands at 252 units. This means that in July almost as many copies were registered as the Cupra Born (74 pieces). The demand for the Dacia Spring seems to be weakening slightly. In July, 81 units were delivered, bringing the annual total to 913 units so far. The Ford Mustang Mach-e (July: 32 units, year: 218 units) also no longer seems to be a runner. With no registration in July and a scant eight deliveries in the first seven months of this year, the Honda e is virtually invisible. To put that in perspective: the Hongqi E-HS9 did better with three registrations in July (Jan-July: 34 units), as did the Jaguar i-Pace, one of which was delivered in July and seven all this year.
No electric Opel Corsa Electric in this Top 10.
87 copies of the Jeep Avenger were registered in the first seven months of this year. Only 8 of them were registered last month. The Lexus RZ (July: 14 units, Jan-July: 41 units) did better than Subaru’s brother Solterra (July: one unit, Jan-July: 31 units) but less well than the Toyota bZ4X (July: 81 units, Jan-July: 364 pieces). Newcomer Lucid Air is also on only one registered copy in July (Jan-July: 17 units). Mercedes-Benz was unable to register more than 100 units of any EQ model in July (EQA: 58 units, EQB: 62 units, EQC: 13 units, EQE: 31 units, EQE SUV: 16 units, EQS: 6 units, EQS SUV: 17 pieces, EQV: 6 pieces). The Nissan Ariya was good for 50 registrations (Jan-July: 318 units). The Leaf is getting a smaller and smaller role. It was good for 16 deliveries in July (Jan-July: 301). The Porsche Taycan was the most popular Porsche in July with 52 registrations. He was just ahead of the 911 (50 units). Also in the first seven months of this year, the Taycan is the most popular car of the Germans (505 units).
The Renault Mégane E-Tech came close to being in the Top 10 with 188 registrations in July. In the first seven months of this year, 2,480 units were registered. Considerably more than the smaller and less expensive Zoe (472 units, July: 18 units).

Chinese EVs
Most Chinese brands are not doing great. For example, Xpeng did not register a single new car in July. In fact, so far Xpeng has registered one car in our country this year, and that was also the eventually withdrawn Xpeng P5. Aiways registered eight U5s in July. This brings the total number of U5s registered this year to a modest 76 units. BYD does better, but also with only one model. The Han and Tang accounted for just one new registration each in June, but the Atto 3 kicked off 78 deliveries last month. MG also did not fare badly with 79 registered MGs 4 in July, 46 registered MGs 5 and 72 ZS EVs. The Marval R lags behind with 6 registrations in July. Nio knows how to bring the Chinese balance back to the less rosy. One EL7, six ET5s and 11 ET7s were signed in July. Throughout this year, Nio registered 109 cars (32 EL7s, 42 ET5s and 35 ET7s). The half Chinese Smart has put 22 copies of the #1 on license plate this year. Half of them were signed in July. So deliveries are just getting started.
