Electric cars cannot be called ’emission-free’ in Australia

Is an electric car emission-free? While driving, but an electric car is also responsible for emissions. In Australia, the market watchdog therefore wants the designation ’emission-free’ to no longer be used so easily for EVs.

Although an electric car does not cause emissions like a car with a combustion engine does, there are of course emissions that can be linked to an electric car. Think of the emissions during the production of the car and possibly during the generation of the electricity used. Then you also have the local ’emissions’ of particulate matter that come from the brakes and tyres. In short; electric cars in the broader picture are certainly not truly emission-free. That is why the Australian equivalent of the Authority for Consumers and Markets believes that this stamp for electric cars should be over.

The ACCC argues according to Drive for stricter marketing rules for manufacturers of electric cars. According to the ACCC, they must tell the consumer a fair story and therefore be open about the fact that emissions are caused by, for example, the production of the EV. The vehicles may therefore no longer be referred to as ’emission-free’. Manufacturers are allowed to indicate ‘that the car does not produce any exhaust emissions while driving’.

What do you think, is this posturing about word usage, or is there indeed a case of deception?
