This is the Kia EV5: electric alternative to the Sportage

Are you in the market for an electric SUV from Kia, but do you think the EV6 is too low and the EV9 too big? Then wait a minute. Chances are that you will also find this brand new electric Kia EV5 at the Dutch dealers!

In March this year, Kia previewed a new electric SUV with the Concept EV5, which will function as an electric alternative to the Sportage. After diving into the database of the Chinese Ministry of Transport and Information Technology, AutoWeek can not only show you the first photos of the final production version of that Concept EV5. This is the electric Kia EV5!

The EV5 is clearly recognizable as a brand new member of Kia’s EV model family. The external similarities with big brother EV9 are not to be missed. Just like the EV9, the EV5 has so-called Star Maplighting and straight windows with a strong upward line at the rear. In addition, the exterior is interspersed with straight lines that are accompanied by rounded corners. The rear lights of the EV5 visually creep even closer together than the ones on the back of the EV9.

That is of course not the only difference with the EV9, because the EV5 is considerably smaller. With a length of 4.62 meters, the Kia EV5 is almost 40 centimeters shorter. The electric SUV is 1.88 meters wide, 1.72 meters high and has a wheelbase of 2.75 meters. In comparison, the Kia EV9 has a whopping 3.10 meters between its front and rear axles. With its dimensions, the EV5 is therefore clearly an electric car in the segment of the Kia Sportage. A direct competitor for electric SUVs such as the Volkswagen ID4.

We already know that the Kia EV5 – at least in China – will be marketed with a 218 hp and 310 Nm strong electric motor and that it will reach a top speed of 185 km / h. We also got hold of its car weight: 1,870 kilos. Please note: this is a variant of the Kia EV5 for the Chinese market. The EV5 that may come to Europe later may differ from this Chinese variant in terms of both technology and design. More later!
