Unless you look at it slightly differently
We asked Bovag for the second-hand sales figures for 2023 and guess what? The Volkswagen Polo and Golf still rule the second-hand market. Both models changed hands more than 40,000 times in January to July of this year, much more than any other model – unless you look at it slightly differently.
Looking at the table below, it is difficult to judge otherwise: the Volkswagen Golf and Polo are still the most sought-after models on the Dutch used car market. Both consumer-to-consumer (C2C) and business-to-consumer (B2C): the two sell by far the most. This has been the case for years and will probably remain so for some time to come; After all, even new, the Golf and Polo have done well for a long time and many thousands of older generations are still driving around. The two are simply the ‘safe’ choices, according to many.
Although there is one model that can actually measure up well with the Golf and Polo. Or rather a model group: the trio city bugs from Peugeot, Citroen and Toyota; the 107/108, C1 and Aygo. Until a few years ago, we had two generations of all three and if you add up their sales figures, we arrive at … 40,741 second-hand sales. This makes the trio even more popular than the Golf and Polo.
Ford Ka and Peugeot 206 still popular second-hand cars
As far as the rest of the models are concerned, it is clear: they do not match the Golf and Polo. The list of sales figures does have some other remarkable things in store. For example, from January to July, a Peugeot 206 changed hands 12,866 times, the majority of which was sold from consumer to consumer. If the C2C list determined the order of the table below, the 206 would even be in sixth place.
With almost 9,000 owner changes, the Ford Ka is also still a relevant member of the used car market. It is also striking that contemporary family cars such as the Renault Captur and Nissan Qashqai rank quite high among dealer sales, but do not often change hands without the intervention of a dealer. In the top 20 B2C we find cars like that Qashqai, but also the Tiguan, while neither can be found in the top 20 C2C. Hip little ones such as the 3-door Mini and the Fiat 500 also stand out in that regard: both models are remarkably much more often sold by second-hand companies than by private individuals, if you compare the ratio with other popular, smaller models.
