Real-world fuel consumption Volvo V70 (2007-2017): four- and five-cylinder diesels compared

A combination that is now impossible

Real-world fuel consumption Volvo V70 (2007-2017): four- and five-cylinder diesels compared

If you say Volvo, you say station wagon. At least that was the case until recently. It seems more and more that the brand will mainly produce SUVs in the future. Preferably electric, but the diesel engine was banned a while ago. In this article we look at a not even very old Volvo that now seems almost impossible. The latest generation V70 with four- and five-cylinder diesel engines. How economical are they in practice?

49 V70 drivers recorded their fuel consumption in the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor. Remarkably, 45 of these cars are equipped with one of several diesel engines. Only three run on petrol, one on LPG. We can’t make much of that, so we focus in this article on the D3 and D4 diesels. Don’t be fooled by the badges: one D3 is not the other, which also applies to a lesser extent to the D4.

Consumption Volvo V70 D3

Under the hood of the Volvo V70 D3 is always a 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine. That knowledge does not tell the whole story, because in the first years this was a five-cylinder with 163 or 136 hp, depending on the year of manufacture. From mid-2015, model year 2016, the five-cylinder was replaced by a four-cylinder with 150 hp. An engine of which the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor only shows one value, so we mainly look at five-cylinder!

Drivers of this traditional Volvo diesel score an average practical consumption of 1 in 16.2 (6.2 l/100 km). The least favorable value is 1 in 13.2 (7.6 l/100 km), while 1 in 19.4 (5.2 l/100 km) is also possible. A value measured over a distance of no less than 255,195 kilometers. With that, the engine, in Volvo terms, should be ‘just broken in’.

Consumption V70 D4

With the Volvo V70 D4, the five-cylinder has already been banned. As of model year 2014, effective November, a 181 hp four-cylinder was housed under the hood. The Consumption Monitor mainly shows values after this year of manufacture, so we only see four-cylinder models. It is interesting that the practical consumption, despite the higher power, turns out slightly better than with the five-cylinder D3. Owners drive an average of 1 to 16.5 (6.1 l/100 km) with their V70 D4.

Outliers are 1 in 13.8 (7.3 l/100 km) and 1 in 19 (5.3 l/100 km), but the worst value has been determined based on three refuelings. Not very representative, so we look further. The highest consumption measured over a considerably longer distance is 1 in 15.7 (6.4 l/100 km).

We have to disappoint those who are now waiting for the consumption of the more powerful V70 D5. Insufficient owners kept track of the consumption of this ‘power diesel’, so we do not dare to draw conclusions from it.
