New Volkswagen California on… the Nürburgring

For years, the Volkswagen California was based on the Transporter, but the new one changes base. The new California will soon be the camper version of the T7 Multivan. The fact that you can also explore the Nürburgring in addition to the Eiffel is evident from these spy pictures on which the new Volkswagen California can already be seen very well.

Volkswagen is taking a preview of the new California to the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf, which opens its doors this Friday. As recently became clear, the new California is no longer a camper van version of the Transporter, but of the T7 Multivan. A lot has changed in Volkswagen’s ‘van country’ lately. For example, the Transporter commercial vehicle is still available alongside the T7 Multivan passenger bus, and Volkswagen also supplies the electric ID Buzz and the always electrically powered ID Buzz Cargo. In addition, there will be a really new Transporter in the long term. It will be based on the Ford Transit. Are we there yet?

Back to California. Like the current T6.1-based California, the T7 Multivan-based California will have a pop-up roof and an interior fully geared towards camping fun. Count on swivel front seats, a fold-out table, a kitchenette, handy storage compartments and of course the possibility to sleep somewhat decently in the California. The new California comes, among other things, as a plug-in hybrid and is apparently extensively tested by Volkswagen in a place where you can only park the camper during the Tourist rides encounters: the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. Incidentally, we aim for the new holiday bus outside the Netherlands to also be supplied with regular petrol and diesel engines. Incidentally, the little brother of the Multivan – the Caddy – is also available as California.
