How to create coloring pictures with Midjourney?

Midjourney was released in its beta version in July 2022. Currently, version 5.1 is used by more than 8.3 million members on the Discord server of this generative artificial intelligence. All you have to do is give it a description, called prompt, and it will create 4 unique images in a few minutes.

But Midjourney isn’t just for generating realistic photography or original artwork. It also allows you to design coloring drawings! Some have understood this, since coloring books entirely generated by Midjourney are already on sale. In this article, we explain how to easily create coloring pictures!

How to create coloring pictures with Midjourney?

1. Launch a prompt

In one of the #newbies-xx channels on the Discord server, type /imagine, followed by the Space bar or the Enter key.

The order of the statements that follow doesn’t matter, but if you want to give more weight to one of them, you can use multiprompts.

2. Enter the full prompt for coloring rendering

There are several instructions for getting a coloring page. These instructions are entered after the /imagine prompt. Among them :

  • (for) coloring book;

  • (for) coloring page(s);

  • coloring book page;

  • coloring book style…

3. Fill in the subject of your drawing and the color mode

  • To make sure your image will be black and white (it’s best for a coloring book!), it’s a good idea to add the black and white statement. It is not mandatory, but it puts all the chances on your side to have a more varied and correct choice.

Here is an example output without the black and white statement:

  • You can also use greyscale, for a grayscale result, with shading.

The coloring page instruction (coloring book, etc.) and the description of the subject constitute the bare minimum to create a coloring drawing. If you do not give more precision in your prompt, Midjourney will randomly choose the style, the lining (type of contours, line thickness…), the shading, the background…

The following instructions are optional, but allow you to obtain a drawing corresponding as closely as possible to what you have in mind.

At any time, you can validate your prompt with the Enter key.

4. Indicate if your image is intended for adults or children: for adult(s)/kid(s)

The coloring for adults will be finer than that for children, which represents rather naive patterns, with thicker lines.

5. Choose the drawing style

There are countless drawing styles that can be used in Midjourney, as is the case for photos.

However, here is a selection, to be added in the form of in the style of… or simply with the designation of the style, followed or not by the word style:

  • realistic cartoon;

  • modern anime;

  • chibi drawing style;

  • old cartoon drawing style;

  • classic manga;

  • kawaii style;

  • minimal styling;

  • retro style…

You can also take inspiration from the style of well-known artists or combine several styles.

6. Give instructions on the lining of the drawing

Here too, there are many possibilities to define the type of lines of the drawing, here are some of them:

  • heavy lines;

  • bold black lines;

  • thick lines;

  • rounded lines;

  • zigzag lines;

  • line art;

  • spiral lines;

  • thin lines;

  • crisp lines…

7. Put your subject in situation

For a more refined drawing, you can put the subject in motion, indicate its position or add a background. The scenario is of no interest if you have chosen a subject such as doodle pattern or mosaic tile: these are tiles or geometric designs.

All instructions can be combined. And as with the photos and other images generated, the more details you give Midjourney about what you want, the more it will offer you a suitable rendering.
