Xpeng X9 revives the 90s

Is the MPV dead? No, he even seems ready for a real comeback. If it were up to the Chinese, yes, anyway. We are now seeing the Xpeng X9 in its entirety for the first time and it evokes some associations with times gone by.

MPVs were once an indispensable part of the street scene, but here in the Netherlands they have largely been pushed out by SUVs. Elsewhere in the world, however, the MPV is still alive and well, such as the United States, but certainly also many Asian countries. It is therefore not surprising that an MPV is still regularly fired at car land from that corner. Think of cars such as the Toyota Alphard, Lexus LM, and from the Chinese corner the Zeekr 009, the probably based Volvo EM90 and the (BYD) Denza D9. Xpeng is also making its contribution with the X9. We now get to see it in all its glory for the first time.

Despite its special sticker jacket, it is already clear that the Xpeng X9 is a striking and large MPV. One that, in terms of lines, is somewhat reminiscent of times gone by here in Europe. We see sharp lines and tight creases along the flanks and the roof, which may evoke vague memories of the angular MPVs delivered in Europe from the 1980s and early 1990s. The enormous, fairly sloping windshield and blunt nose also fit in well with that. picture, just like the fact that Xpeng photographed the X9 on a lawn. The design of the front is more reminiscent of an MPV from more recently, namely the Citroën C4 Picasso.

Regardless of what it may or may not resemble – you can decide for yourself – the Xpeng X9 is of course virtually incomparable to ‘our’ MPVs of the past. The main difference is that the Xpeng X9 is fully electric. Xpeng has not yet released any information about the drivetrain. The Xpeng X9 will reportedly be fully unveiled this year. Nothing is known yet about a possible crossing to Europe, but don’t be surprised if Xpeng also tries it with the X9.
