SUVs account for more than half of European sales

The milestone has been reached: more than half of new cars in Europe are SUVs. It is important that you see the Tesla Model Y as such, because that car makes a significant contribution.

Around this time last year we wrote that almost half of the new cars in Europe were a crossover or SUV. Growth has continued as expected, so now for the first time the tall models account for more than half of sales. Automotive News makes that claim based on figures from Dataforce, which states that SUVs and crossovers accounted for 51 percent of European sales in the first half of 2023. The market share of the SUV grew by 23 percent, compared to 17 percent for the car market as a whole.

The ‘victory’ for SUVs is largely due to the Tesla Model Y, which finishes comfortably at number 1 with 138,152 European registrations. The Volkswagen T-Roc is number 2 in this category, the Toyota Yaris Cross at number 3. So it is certainly not just about large, gas-guzzling beasts, rather the opposite.

The ‘small SUVs’ category was previously the largest new car category in Dataforce’s figures. In the first half of 2023, 1.13 million small long-legged plants were sold. The second largest category is that of ‘compact SUVs’, i.e. slightly larger cars. Only then will the regular small car class follow, again followed by the slightly larger ‘Compact’ alternative.
