China: ‘EU investigation into Chinese electric cars is pure protectionism’

China is certainly not happy with the investigation into electric cars from China announced by the European Commission. ‘Europe’ would, among other things, look at how these Chinese EVs are marketed cheaply in Europe through state subsidies, so that they compete unfairly with non-Chinese EVs.

The European Commission recently announced through President Ursula von der Leyen that it will investigate electric cars from China. The prices of Chinese EVs are said to compete unfairly with, for example, European electric cars due to ‘huge state subsidies’. There will be a so-called anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese electric cars, which may result in measures in the long term. Chinese authorities are certainly not happy about this.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce calls the announced investigation a pure form of protectionism, which will disrupt the global automotive industry and international supply chains. It also says that it will have a negative effect on the trade relationship between China and the European Union, according to Automotive News. The ministry says it is closely monitoring the EU’s “protectionist tendencies” and promises to protect the rights and interests of Chinese companies. On social media, the secretary general of the Chinese trade organization China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) states that the good competitive position of Chinese EVs has nothing to do with subsidies.
