No more rough restomods

Dutch Land Rover converter Tophat bankrupt

The Dutch Tophat, known for quite intense restomods based on the old Land Rover Defender, has been declared bankrupt.

The original Defender is a popular victim for various tuners, coachbuilders and other creative minds. Consider, for example, the creations of Bowler and the Dutch Heritage Customs. In addition to Heritage Customs, there is another Dutch player in this field; Tophat. This company, based in Nijkerkerveen, is best known for restomods in which the Land Rover Defender is taken to a higher level in terms of sportiness. For example, it spoons the LS-V8 from the Chevrolet Corvette into the well-known off-roader and, if desired, it can also be decorated in a very opulent, sporty or a mix of both. This example in our used car range is a good example of Tophat’s work.

Unfortunately, it now appears that work is being stopped (perhaps only temporarily) at Tophat. A reader tipped us off that Tophat BV was declared bankrupt last week. The registration of the bankruptcy shows that the decision was made on September 12 and that Tophat BV, also trading under the name Badass Defenders, had three employees at that time. Tophat has now largely disappeared on social media. There are still no further details of the bankruptcy and AutoWeek is still awaiting a possible response from Tophat.
