Tesla double winner

Now that the first three quarters of 2023 are behind us, it’s time to take a look at what the most popular electric cars are so far this year. Number one is of course very easy to guess. Which EVs are in the Top 5? AutoWeek requested the figures from Bovag.
We previously wrote about the most registered new passenger cars in the Netherlands to date. Today we also look at which models are on the podium, although for now we only focus on electric cars. The Tesla Model Y was the car with the most registrations in the first three quarters of this year, so it is not surprising that the Model Y is also the most popular EV this year.
Of the almost 85,000 new electric cars that have already been registered in the Netherlands this year, no fewer than 10,291 were a Tesla Model Y. This means that more than one in ten new EVs already on the road this year was a Model Y. The car accounted for 12 percent of EV registrations. In second place we find the ever popular Peugeot e-208. The French hatchback was good for 4,984 registered copies in the first three quarters of this year. That is a lot, but not even half as many as the Model Y. A total of 8,183 Peugeot 208 were registered between January and September. The electric e-208 therefore accounted for a 60 percent share of the 208 registrations.

Quite popular for some time now: the electric Volvo XC40 Recharge.
The electric Volvo XC40 Recharge takes the third and final place on the podium. The electric variant of the XC40, which is also available with mild-hybrid combustion engines, already accounted for 4,308 registrations this year. A total of 6,125 XC40s have been registered. So no less than 70 percent of these were an electric XC40 Recharge. If we compare the
In fourth place is the Skoda Enyaq iV with 3,850 registered copies. In the first nine months of this year, 3,850 units were registered. This meant that the electric SUV accounted for a quarter of Skoda registrations in that period. The Kia Niro EV ends up in fifth place with 3,341 registered units. 5,480 Niros have been registered in the Netherlands in the past nine months. So 60 percent of them were an electric Niro EV.

Top 5 brands with most registered EVs (Q1-Q3 2023)
Not entirely surprising, Tesla is the brand that registered the most new electric passenger cars in the first three quarters of this year. This concerns a total of 13,817 cars. Of these, just under 75 percent were a Model Y. 3,132 units (23 percent) were a Model 3. The Tesla Model S and Model X together accounted for less than 3 percent of the Teslas registered in the Netherlands this year. We find Peugeot in second place, followed by Volkswagen in third place. Volkswagen has registered 2,525 ID3s, 3,114 ID4s and 502 ID5s this year. The ID Buzz was good for 295 registrations. Of the 26,885 Volkswagens already registered this year, about 24 percent were an electric ID model.
With 6,450 electric cars registered in the first three quarters of this year, BMW is in fourth place in the EV rankings. The i4 is the brand’s most popular EV with 2,301 registrations, although the i4 feels the hot breath of the iX1 (2,295 units) on its neck. 1,296 copies of the iX3 have been registered. The i7 and iX successively reached 422 and 135 units. Volvo closes the Top 5 with 5,722 registered EVs. In addition to the XC40 Recharge, it also supplied 1,414 C40s. Unlike the XC40, the Volvo C40 always has an electric drivetrain.
