From 2025, only EVs will be welcome in central Stockholm

Don’t have an electric car? Then from 2025 you will probably no longer be able to enter the center of the Swedish capital. There is a plan on the table to only allow EVs into the city center from 2025. From that year onwards, cars with a petrol or diesel engine would no longer be welcome.

Reports from Reuters show that the Stockholm city council will ban petrol and diesel cars from large parts of the city center by 2025. That is what Lars Stromgren, Deputy Mayor of Transport and Urban Environment (that is actually the title), is said to have said. An environmental zone would be established in large parts of the center. “Due to the air quality in Stockholm, babies are born with lung diseases and the elderly die prematurely. That is a completely unacceptable situation,” said Stomgren of Miljöpartiet de gröna (the environmental party). An exception would be made for large vans. Customers with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain would still be allowed to enter the environmental zone and the environmental zone does not apply to, among other things, ambulances, police cars and cars owned by and for the disabled. The environmental zone could be expanded at a later stage, the party said. According to Reuters, the Swedish Transport Federation is logically not happy with the plan. “We have reduced our emissions by 34 percent since 2010. The Greens and their colleagues in Stockholm are now in far too much of a hurry,” the advocacy group said in a statement.
