New variant is called Tourer

Unlike the new Passat, the Volkswagen ID7 comes in two flavors; as a sedan and as a station wagon. We can now see the second one more clearly and Volkswagen has already announced that it is not called the ID7 Variant but the ID7 Tourer.
The electric counterpart of the new Volkswagen Passat, the Volkswagen ID7, is available as a sedan and a station wagon. The latter is somewhat special, because electric station wagons are currently still quite rare. A welcome addition, undoubtedly for those who are looking for an electric pack mule, but do not necessarily want an SUV. Last spring we received the first and immediately clear sign of life from that ‘ID7 Variant’. Now Volkswagen itself presents two photos and immediately lets us know that we were wrong when it comes to the name.
The more spacious ID7 goes by the name Volkswagen ID7 Tourer. After more than sixty years of Variant, the brand is taking a slightly different path for its electric station wagons. Station wagons? Yes, Volkswagen is emphatically talking about its ‘first electric station wagon’, and more will undoubtedly follow at some point. They are therefore called Tourer instead of Variant. Anyway, more relevant is of course whether you can still fit a bit of your stuff in such a Tourer. Well, that’s nice. The Volkswagen ID7 Tourer offers 545 liters of luggage space with the rear seats up and up to 1,714 liters with the rear seats flat. However, it is clearly one step less than the new Passat Variant. It swallows 690 to 1,920 liters.

The fact that the ID7 is a bit narrower than the Passat Variant is in a way striking because it is a bit longer. However, that extra length is mainly between the wheels. The butt of the ID7 Tourer is visibly more stocky than that of the Passat Variant. The battery pack in the bottom of the ID7 will undoubtedly also take up some of the interior space. In the new year, Volkswagen will remove all camouflage stickers from the ID7 Tourer, so that we can see more clearly how exactly its rear is drawn.
