New electric cars are sold for an average of €53,000

Not only have the prices of used cars increased significantly in recent times, new passenger cars are also not becoming cheaper. Logically, the average price that Dutch people pay for a new car has also increased significantly. This year, consumers will pay no less than 36 percent more for a new passenger car than five years ago.
Until May this year, the average purchase price – and not the asking price – of a new passenger car was almost €46,000. Dutch people paid an average of €45,993 for a new passenger car, according to figures from RDC and Bovag.
If we go back in time five years, we see that the average price paid for a new passenger car in the Netherlands has increased by about 36 percent since then. In 2018, the average price of a car purchased in the Netherlands was still €33,928. In five years, the average purchase price has increased by €12,065 (35.6 percent). Does this scare you? Then we can reassure you: it can be much more intense. For example, in 1975 no less than 48 percent more was paid for a new car than five years earlier. In 1980, a new car was on average 68 percent more expensive than in 1975.
Up to and including May this year, an average of €35,879 was paid for a new passenger car with a petrol engine. The average purchase price of a car with a diesel engine in that period was more than double that: €83,632. A new car with LPG machine (Dacia!) changed owners this year for an average of €22,592. In the Netherlands, an average of just under 40 grand (€39,944) was paid for a new car with a hybrid drivetrain, while a plug-in hybrid was sold for an average of €64,448 this year.
And what was the average price paid for a new electric car this year? Quite a bit. Even almost half more than for a petrol car: €52,919. Logically, hydrogen cars still have the highest purchase price on average: €76,694.
Did you also buy a new car this year? Were you far below or far above the average purchase price?
