BMW is the last of the three major German premium brands to publish quarterly figures and looks back on Q3 2023 more positively than its competitors. Not surprising, because the lead over Mercedes and Audi is impressive.
The BMW Group sold 1,836,563 cars with the BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce brands in the first three quarters of 2023. Of these, 1,621,267 units bore the BMW brand name. That is more than last year (1,747,838/1,533,866), but also more than the competitors. For example, Mercedes sold 1,529,800 cars worldwide in the same period, while Audi sold 1,404,833. BMW can therefore call itself the largest premium brand. Over the entire year to date, BMW sold 5.1 percent more cars, but in the past third quarter the increase was slightly higher at 5.8 percent.
Good sales results naturally also include healthy profits. BMW predicted in advance an EBIT margin of between 9 and 10.5 percent for 2023. The actual result achieved for the automotive branch has so far been 10.3 percent, close to the upper limit of the predicted area. Moreover, here too there is a significant increase compared to last year: BMW recorded 9.1 percent more profit for its automotive branch in Q3 and even 18.2 percent for the company as a whole. It is therefore not surprising that people in Munich look back on the past quarter with satisfaction. At Mercedes people were somewhat less positive: the profit achieved there is also still within the predicted bandwidth, but close to the lower limit. Moreover, Mercedes actually saw its profit fall by 6.8 percent. Audi has also recorded a lower profit so far in 2023 than last year.
