Take your pick: roof or rear doors?

It was quiet for a while at Polestar after the introduction of the 1 and 2, but now there is a lot of news on the way. Among the newcomers we find the Polestar 5, the production version of which can now be clearly seen for the first time. The 6 also comes into the picture again.

Like many other ‘hip’ EV builders, Polestar does not follow the usual pattern when introducing new models. The Polestar 5 has not yet been shown to the public, but suddenly appeared on stage during ‘Polestar Day 2023’. The released photos only show the car from three-quarters of the back and there are few or no specifications, so this is certainly not an official unveiling moment.

If we look at what can be seen, it is striking that the Polestar 5 is indeed a strikingly contoured, low sedan-like car. This is the production version of the 2020 Precept Concept, with which the brand showed its new design language for the first time. It is difficult to say whether it is a liftback or a sedan. Not because we don’t know, but because, in the absence of a rear window, the hatch ends halfway up the butt and is therefore actually somewhere between a sedan hatch and a liftback ‘door’. You could see the Polestar 5 before on AutoWeek.nl, thanks to patent sketches found by colleague Krijgsman. This first real photo gives an even better impression of the car, which has a striking rear light and an elongated, but not too low body.

In addition to being a four-door flagship, the Polestar 5 is also a kind of test vehicle for new charging technology. The collaboration with the Israeli StoreDot was previously announced, but now receives additional explanation. A specially prepared Polestar 5 prototype should be on the road next year, in which the innovative charging technology should make it possible to recharge 160 km of driving range in 5 minutes. According to StoreDot, this is possible with existing battery technology and therefore does not require revolutionary different batteries. The regular Polestar 5 is also expected to arrive in 2024.

The Polestar 6 can also be seen at Polestar Day, again only diagonally from the rear. This car was also preceded by a concept car, in this case the 02 Concept from 2022. The Polestar 6 will be a four-seater convertible, although its high rear and squat body make it look more like a roadster. Underneath that high ass lies a very special roof construction, which when closed made it appear as a harmonious coupe.

The Polestars 5 and 6 are clearly related, not only in appearance, but also under the skin. They are both on a newly developed platform, specially intended for these top models of the line-up. In addition to fast charging with 800 volt technology, fast acceleration is possible with the Polestar 6: the brand promises a power of no less than 884 hp and 900 Nm, from two electric motors. The Polestar 6 must be able to shoot from a standstill to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds. Its top speed is 250 km/h. It will be launched on the market in 2026.

The camouflaged car in the background of the Polestar 6 is a ‘Polestar 5 research prototype’. A test sample, but not a novelty in itself.
