Dutch sales of electric cars are below the European average

The Netherlands is considered one of the absolute leaders in the European Union in the field of electric driving, but this was not reflected in the sales figures in October.

Sales of fully electric cars in the Netherlands in October lagged considerably behind those in most other European countries. A total of 8,268 electrically powered cars were sold in our country, 29 percent more compared to October last year. However, more than 36 percent more of these cars were sold throughout the European Union, the European car industry organization ACEA announced.

The fact that things are slowing down in the Netherlands is partly due to the reluctance among consumers due to uncertainties surrounding costs. It is not yet clear what MRB will have to pay for an electric car. It has also previously emerged that there are concerns about what will happen to charging costs and the higher purchase price remains a problem for many.

In total, almost 122,000 electric cars were sold in the EU last month. Belgium, Cyprus and the Czech Republic stood out with increases of around 150 percent. Denmark showed a doubling of sales and in Spain electrical sales increased by 88 percent. In Germany, one of Europe’s most important car markets, electric cars are less popular. There, these sales increased by only 4.3 percent.

Total European sales

Total sales of new passenger cars in the EU increased further in October, reaching sales growth of 15 consecutive months. Last month, more than 855,400 new cars were registered in the EU, an increase of almost fifteen percent compared to a year earlier. Last year, sales were under severe pressure due to a shortage of parts, such as chips. These supply problems were solved months ago, allowing significantly more cars to be delivered. Incidentally, the Netherlands experienced a small decline last month. 1.5 percent fewer new cars were registered here than in October 2022.
