The average Volvo EX30 costs 45 grand and is gray

Volvo made a big impression with the starting price of the electric Volvo EX30, which in its barest form costs less than 37,000 euros. However, the first sales figures show that the average copy costs more than €45,000. We list the most common colors, options and drivetrains.

The car you see above this article is the Volvo EX30 as we see it most often in the Netherlands. At least, that’s what it seems like. The first orders already provide a good picture of what EX30 buyers find important and attractive, so it is nice to take a closer look.

Colour

Let’s start with what you see most clearly: the color. The Vapor Gray shown is the only color for which Volvo does not charge a surcharge, and that undoubtedly plays a role in the popularity of this gray. No fewer than 45 percent of buyers sign up for it. Onyx Black – black – comes in second place with a share of 21 percent. Crystal White and Cloud Blue each entice 15 percent of buyers, while the highly striking Moss Yellow remains a niche option with a 4 percent share.

Only 4 percent of buyers choose this Moss Yellow.

Powertrain

The Volvo EX30 is available in three different forms. For the basic price you get a rear-wheel drive with a modest 49 kWh LFP battery, good for a driving range of 344 kilometers. Only 15 percent of EX30 buyers choose this powertrain, while the lightning-fast Twin Motor Performance attracts no more than 10 percent of buyers. The rest, namely 75 percent, choose to move up one step from the basic version to the Single Motor Extended Range. It offers the same 272 hp, but with a net 64 kWh it can travel 476 theoretical kilometers on a full battery. That will of course cost something, because Volvo charges €5,140 for this upgrade. At least, at the selected equipment level. With the basic Core version, the upgrade to the large battery costs ‘only’ €4,700, and that has everything to do with the wheels.

Equipment level

That’s how it is. Anyone who equips a ‘bare’ Core with the Extended Range drive will stick to the standard 18-inch wheels. With the more expensive Plus, Extended Range automatically means that the larger wheels shown are installed, which explains the price difference. That is relevant, because more than half of EX30 buyers choose the Plus. Basic version Core accounts for 27 percent, top version Ultra leads 22 percent of buyers to pay the maximum amount. The Plus and Ultra have another external feature: a black roof. Only the Volvo EX30 Core is completely in one color.

Interior

From the popular equipment level Plus it is possible to choose an optional interior color, namely greenish Pine instead of the standard blue Indigo. This is in vain in the vast majority of cases, because no fewer than 86 percent of buyers ‘just go’ for Indigo. What also helps is that the entry-level Core version does not come with anything else. Pine is chosen by only 5 percent and is therefore just as popular as the grayish Mist. Like the refreshingly light Breeze (4 percent), this is only available on the Ultra. Striking: with the Moss Yellow exterior color you get the Pine interior for free with the Plus.

Options

Then the individual options. There aren’t that many, so we’ll be done here quickly. Volvo offers the extra dark ‘privacy glass’ for the rear side windows separately in all cases, which is commendable for such a taste-sensitive option. For the time being, 45 percent of buyers choose to pay 395 euros to make the children invisible. 20-inch wheels are selected by 13 percent of these buyers, the folding tow bar – nice and Dutch – by 30 percent. By far the most popular option is the climate package. For 360 euros you can buy heated seats and steering wheel, and that is a temptation that only 30 percent of buyers manage to resist. So 70 percent of the EX30s do have it, good to know for future used car buyers!

If we choose the most popular version, the most popular colors and the climate package, a Volvo EX30 Plus will roll out for €45,295. That is exactly what Volvo expects to receive approximately per EX30 ordered, which means that in practice the average EX30 is a lot more expensive, but of course also a lot more luxurious and capable than the basic version. That 45 grand also includes delivery costs. ‘Bare’ costs ‘the average EX30’ €44,200, which also makes this version eligible for the SEPP subsidy of €2,950.
