This month the number of car burglaries will peak

The number of car burglaries is traditionally highest in November. This is reported by comparison site Independer based on figures from the past three years. Things are going extra fast in some municipalities this year.

November appears to be a good month for rough people who want to gain access to a car. The number of car burglaries in the past three years was the highest in this month. Independer reports this based on police figures. In those years, the number of car burglaries in November was on average 20.2 percent higher than the average in the other months. October is also a peak month, with 18.9 percent more car burglaries than average.

This year the number of car burglaries appears to be slightly higher than last year. The counter stands at no fewer than 35,380 burglaries up to and including October, 715 more than in that period last year. In some municipalities the increase is exceptionally large. In IJsselstein it is particularly striking: there it is almost a doubling. There have already been 144 car burglaries there up to and including October, compared to 53 during that period last year. A significant increase is also noticeable in Goirle (64 burglaries out of 26 last year), Gouda (157 out of 69), Meierijstad (86 out of 39) and Assen (181 out of 88).

However, this growth does not necessarily say anything about how likely it is that your car will be stolen. For example, there has been a significant increase in Gouda, but the number of burglaries per 1,000 cars is still relatively small. Amsterdam has the most car break-ins: this year there are 21.6 break-ins per 1,000 cars. Utrecht follows with 16.5 per 1,000 and Rotterdam takes third place in this dubious top, with 16.2 per 1,000. Below you can see the number of car burglaries per 1,000 cars per municipality.
