EV drivers are often middle-aged men with a high income

You may have already expected it, but now the figures are there: EV drivers are often middle-aged men with a relatively high income.

Of the more than half a million fully electric cars and plug-ins in the Netherlands, roughly half are owned by private individuals. So you have to look at what kind of owner there is. It turns out that it remarkably often concerns men between forty and sixty years old. That message NU.nl based on figures from Statistics Netherlands. As many as 77 percent of plug-in car owners fall into this age category, while if you include all cars, only 60 percent of owners fall into that group.

Statistics Netherlands also looked at the link between income and car ownership. This shows that of the 25 percent of households with the lowest incomes, 41.7 percent have a car, of which 0.6 percent have a plug-in car. Of the 25 percent of households with the highest incomes, 85.1 percent had a car, of which 3.5 percent had a rechargeable car.

There are also major differences per municipality. The three municipalities with the most electric drivers are municipalities where many people with a high income live, namely Rozendaal (5.8 percent), Laren (4.8 percent) and Blaricum (4.5 percent). The fewest households with a plug-in car lived in Heerlen: 0.7 percent. Pekela and Brunssum followed with 0.8 percent.
