Including extra battery in the loading area!
Four years after Tesla released the first images of the Tesla Cybertruck, the first copies were handed over to buyers tonight during a real delivery party. The so-called Tesla Delivery Event – where CEO Elon Musk was hailed as a deity – coincided with the release of the specifications. Just like the car itself, they are pretty insane.
Back in 2019, Tesla released the first photos and preliminary specifications of the electric Cybertruck. With this, Tesla in the United States casts his fishing line over a pond where the fish are more eager than almost anywhere else in the world: that of the pick-ups. The Cybertruck is a counterpart to electric pickups such as the Rivian R1T, Ford F-150 Lightning and Chevrolet Silverado EV. If Telsa’s CEO is to be believed, the Cybertruck is driving them to hell. On various levels.
Beastly and with extra battery in the cargo box
The 5.68 meter long and no less than 2.2 meter wide Tesla Cybertruck will soon be available in a three-motor and 845 hp variant that – in Beast Mode – It reaches 100 km/h from a standstill in just 2.7 seconds. A Porsche 911 Turbo S completes that sprint just as quickly. To show the madness of the Cybertruck: a 911 Turbo S weighs about 1,625 kilos, a Cybertruck weighs almost double that at about 3,103 kilos.
According to Elon Musk, the Cybertruck is not only lightning fast, but also stronger and more versatile than almost any other pick-up on the market. It can tow up to – hold on – up to 4,990 kilos and has a payload of 1,134 kilos. Please note: these figures belong to the three-engine top version called ‘Cyberbeast’. It has an estimated range of 515 kilometers. With a ‘range extender’ that range should increase to no less than 708 kilometers. Its top speed is 209 km/h. Fast charging is possible up to 250 kW.
Wait a second. A range extender? Certainly. If desired, Tesla can supply an extra battery pack that takes up roughly a third of the cargo box. The luggage compartment basically measures a large 3,424 liters. The Tesla Cybertruck Cyberbeast will cost around €88,500 in the United States.
Less expensive versions
There will also be other power sources. For example, a regular four-wheel drive variant with more than 600 hp will appear that will have to do without the spectacular-sounding Cyberbeast name. With this Cybertruck All-Wheel Drive you can reach 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds and you should be able to reach 180 km/h. This is the first variant of the Cybertruck that weighs less than three tons (2,995 kilos). It immediately has the largest range: about 547 kilometers (with range extender: 756 kilometers). Tesla charges around €63,250 in the United States for the Cybertruck All-Wheel Drive. This variant can also tow 4,990 kilos.
Tesla will also launch a rear-wheel drive Cybertruck in 2025. It should travel more than 400 kilometers on a full battery. You reach 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds. Its towing weight of 3,402 kg is well below that of its more powerful brothers. It weighs 2,995 kilos. This ‘entry-level Cybertruck’ has an American starting price of approximately €45,830.
Smoother than a Citroën CX
The loading platform is over 1.80 meters deep and 1.22 meters wide. “If it fits in, it can go,” Musk said to cheers from the Tesla-loving crowd. But we have even more new data. For example, the angular sample has a Cw value of 0.335. This of course cuts through the air less efficiently than the Model 3 and Model S, but it is considerably more aerodynamic than a Ram 1500 and even a Citroën CX.
The Cybertruck has an impressive ground clearance of 43.2 centimeters, thanks in part to the enormous 35-inch off-road rubber. The still special appearance has adaptive and active air suspension all around, limited slip differentials, torque vectoring rear, steer-by-wire steering and, thanks to four-wheel steering, a smaller turning circle than the Tesla Model S. Also interesting: the Cybertruck does not have a 12v architecture for the systems that have nothing to do with the drivetrain, but has 48v on-board voltage. Unique, according to Musk.
Corporate identity
On the inside, the Cybertruck exudes the typical Tesla atmosphere. This means that in the five-seater you will find little more than a set of screens. Tesla’s corporate identity is reflected in a huge 18.5-inch display in the front and an equally meager 9.4-inch display for the rear-seat passengers. The Tesla Cybertruck has 15 speakers on board, various USB-C ports and even various 120v and 240v sockets. Thanks to the mainly glass roof, a lot of light enters the interior.
But there is more to tell. The torsional stiffness of the Tesla Cybertruck must be higher than that of the McLaren P1 hypercar. Fiercely. Plus, you can empty a machine gun on the Cybertuck without a single bullet entering the interior. Why? “Why not,” said the Tesla CEO. “What can your pickup handle?”
Elon Musk is not modest – as a top executive should be – about his company’s latest creation. “Every once in a while, special products come onto the market. Once every 5-10 years, something really special comes along. We remember those special moments. It’s very rare that a product comes along that people said was impossible. This is one of those moments. Experts said this car couldn’t exist, but here it is,” says Musk, taking a swipe at critics. “This is our best product ever. Thanks to the Cybertruck, the future looks like the future.”
Cybertruck and the Netherlands
Is the Cybertruck coming to the Netherlands? It really does look like it. Some time ago, all traces of the crazy pick-up disappeared from the Dutch website, but the Tesla Cybertruck has now been given its own page! Hopefully more later!
