To work more efficiently
Renault hopes to reduce costs for new cars by working more efficiently. Among other things, production costs must be significantly reduced in the coming years.
Renault is making good progress with new fuel models such as the Austral, Espace and Rafale, but also electric newcomers such as the Scenic and soon the new Renault 5. It does not stop there: seven new fully electric models will appear by 2031, including a real electric reincarnation of the original Twingo. In addition to its mischievous appearance, the new Twingo must also convince with an attractive price tag. The goal is ‘less than €20,000’.
In order to really reduce the price, something has to change at Renault. Renault Group therefore now states that it will drastically cut production costs and development time of new models. For fuel cars, production costs must be reduced by 30 percent, for electric cars even by 50 percent. Renault Group wants to achieve this by 2027. The development time of new models will also be reduced from three to two years. Renault, especially with the latter, shows itself to be more ambitious than, for example, competitor Volkswagen. Earlier this year, Volkswagen’s technical chief declared Coach that Volkswagen wants to shorten the development time from an average of 4.5 to three years.
Renault says it can work faster and more (energy) efficiently with the help of artificial intelligence. Also with the help of the ‘Metaverse’, which, for example, allows employees to be prepared more quickly for production processes. Consider VR training for factory workers, who can work on a new model virtually before the time actually comes.
