Toyota is expanding the new Crown family at a breakneck pace. There are already various body variants and it is the Toyota Crown Sport of which a potent plug-in hybrid variant has now been presented.

For decades, the Toyota Crown was anything but an SUV or crossover, but nowadays large-legged Crowns do exist. The Crown family currently consists of the Crown Crossover, the Crown Sedan, the Crown Signia and the Crown Sport. The Toyota Crown Sport was already presented with a 234 hp mild-hybrid powertrain and would later also have a plug-in hybrid version. That too is there now.

Although the Crown Sport is not available in the Netherlands and will not be available, the crossover does have a link with Toyotas that you can get here. The Crown Sport gets the same 306 hp plug-in hybrid powertrain as is also available in the Toyota RAV4. According to the Japanese, the Toyota Crown Sport PHEV should be able to drive a distance of 90 kilometers on electric power alone. Thanks to an electric motor on the rear axle, the four-wheel drive plug-in is currently only available in sporty Sport RZ/RS trim and has a set of springs and dampers adapted to the heavier plug-in hybrid drivetrain. For the time being, the interior has always been finished in a distinct red-black color combination and sports seats are also standard.

Toyota expects to sell 300 copies of the Crown Sport PHEV per month. Its starting price in Japan: the equivalent of around €48,500.
