Triumph is about to revive the Daytona, seven years after the Daytona 675 R was taken out of production. However, the 2024 Daytona will not be a street version of the Moto2 machine, but the third model of the new 660 platform.
In case you still haven’t noticed, the Supersport is making a huge comeback. Since the credit crisis, the Supersport had been in free fall, on the one hand because the engines had become overkill for the street and on the other hand because further development – especially in the field of electronics – had made them unaffordable.
However, the sharp decline in sales did not mean that the Supersport no longer appealed to the imagination, but rather that we had come to realize that you can actually do nothing with it on the street anymore, except hand in your driver’s license. You no longer bought street-legal Superbikes because of what you wanted to do with them, but because of what they could do and then you really had to be an enthusiast. A bit of 60 strumming with 200+ hp is anything but exciting.
However, the undiminished popularity also indicated that there would indeed be a market for a new Supersport, but in a more realistic form. The looks of a real Supersport, but with driving characteristics that are much more tailored to street use. Aprilia took the lead with the RS 660, Yamaha followed with the YZF-R7 and for the 2024 model year, Suzuki unveiled the GSX-8R at EICMA in Milan.
And it doesn’t seem to stop there, judging by a post from Triumph on social media of a first photo posted in which a super sports model can clearly be recognized. Now this photo could also tease the arrival of a street-legal version of the Daytona 765, if it weren’t for the fact that on the Triumph website itself you are now referred to a “Coming Soon” page, with a 660 logo and the promise that a new model will be unveiled on January 9, 2024.
