Phillips has both OLED and LCD TVs and as partly explained on previous pages: LCD technology has been around for years, is cheap and is still being improved. We look at the extensive LCD 65-inch 8808 model that has the unique Ambilight system, is released under the name The One and is available from 43 inches to 85 inches.

Screen
The TV looks sleek with a brushed dark gray aluminum base and narrow edges. The LCD panel and technology is an integrated whole measuring 145 x 90 x 8.4 cm including a rotating base; wall mounting is optionally possible. The brightness of the screen is a maximum of about 500 nits and the color reproduction is 90% P3. Micro Dimming Pro provides even illumination of the screen.

Technology
The one developed by Philips itself P5 Picture Engine controls the input of image and sound. Various optimization techniques, including HDR, HDR10+, HLG and Dolby Vision, improve the image as soon as it is present in the video signal. Upscaling works from SD to UHD-4K. The fast and user-friendly Google TV (Android) with many apps is used for operation. There are two HDMI 2.1/48Gbps and two HDMI 2.0 connections. In addition, there are two USB and a LAN connections, wireless communication takes place with BT5 and Wi-Fi 5. Transmitter input runs via a coaxial cable or DVB tuners incl. CI+. Gamers can use the image refresh of up to 120 Hz at 2560 x 1440 pixels, a pixel time of 9 ms and ALLM, HDMI VRR, Dolby Vision Game and AMD FreeSync Premium. The remote control can also be controlled by voice (Google Assistant), but does not integrate with an external set-top box.

Sound and Vision
The image of The One is sharp due to the 4K resolution and has good color reproduction. Deep black is missing as we see with an OLED screen. The viewing angle is a point of attention, side view quickly produces less clear images. The sound is provided by a 40-watt amplifier with 4 speakers with automatic calibration and Dolby Atmos and DTS support. The sound sounds a bit flat due to poor bass. A soundbar or multimedia amplifier will greatly increase the quality.

AmbiLight
The unique Ambilight is built-in on three sides and emits colored light that is in line with what is shown on the TV. Many function settings are possible that can be adjusted via the remote control. The image is magnified with the lighting and that is a nice immersive concept.

Conclusion
This TV has an attractive price for a 65-inch TV and offers a clear 4K image. The use of HDR techniques gives the display a qualitative boost. Compared to the high-end models, and especially the latest OLEDs, brightness, contrast and wide viewing angles are compromised, but the price reflects that.
