Less necessity?

It seems that the compact, electric Volkswagen ID2 will arrive a little later than expected, due to more flexible rules for cars with combustion engines.
Several car manufacturers are preparing for the arrival of smaller and more affordable electric cars. This also applies to Volkswagen, which has, among other things, the ID2 in the pipeline. This Polo-sized EV, whose appearance builds on the ID.2All Concept from early last year, was initially expected to join the ranks in 2025. Things don’t go that fast, that’s for sure Auto, Motor und Sport understood. The delay appears to be a conscious choice.
The German medium states that Volkswagen has revised its strategy because a relaxation of the Euro 7 rules, so feared by many car manufacturers, has recently been on the table. As a result, the current generation of fuel engines would meet the emission standards until 2030, giving the Volkswagen Polo a longer life. There is therefore less haste in offering an electric alternative. That does not mean that ID2 will only take over in 2030. According to AMuS large-scale production of the ID2 has been postponed from 2025 to 2026. The introduction may take place in 2025, but the ID2 would only appear on the road in large numbers a year later.
In that case, 2026 will be the year to circle in red if you are interested in more affordable IDs, because then the ‘SUV brother’ of the ID2 will also appear. That model relates to the ID2 as the T-Cross relates to the Polo. Furthermore, there is an even smaller ID in the barrel that focuses on the Dacia Spring. That EV, possibly called ID1, could also appear in 2026.
