Number continues to grow

There are currently 220,454 vintage cars in the Netherlands. The number of vintage cars, cars that are forty years old and older, is steadily increasing in our country. This in itself is not surprising, because the entire fleet is growing and cars are also getting older. Yet it remains special that more and more people want to preserve cars that are so old. In five years there could even be more than 300,000 vintage cars.
We asked our regular figures supplier Vinacles to count for us how many cars over forty there are in our country and also how that number has grown over the past ten years. It turns out that around ten thousand vintage cars are added every year. With one exception: in 2016, the number of people over forty even decreased slightly. When we look for the cause, we automatically end up at the demolition scheme that was in force in various cities at the time. Rotterdam, The Hague, Amsterdam and Utrecht gave hefty compensation (up to €3,500) to residents who got rid of their old car and bought a younger car. These municipal scrappage schemes were a follow-up to the national scrappage scheme of 2009-2010, in which 81,000 old cars were taken off the road.
The number of vintage cars will continue to grow in the future
As far as we can see, there will be no new scrappage regulations anytime soon, so we can assume that the number of vintage cars in our country will continue to grow. Vinacles also calculated that for us. It will increase to 319,000 units in 2029! However, Vinacles notes that this is a theoretical figure, because it is impossible to include the future export and scrapping of cars in this calculation. Of course, that goes without saying. In the meantime, it’s fun to dream a bit. Imagine, 319,000 vintage cars in the Netherlands… Then you will encounter them on every street corner!
