Diesel lives on the second-hand market

Used diesel will be more popular than second-hand EV in 2023

Second-hand diesels were on average more popular in 2023 than second-hand electric cars. This is evident from the annual report of Automotive Mediaventions, the parent company of Gaspedal.nl and Autotrack.

Is diesel doomed? It looks like it. Car manufacturers invest little or no more in the development of new diesel engines and the number of models with a self-igniter is rapidly decreasing. Of all the almost 370,000 new passenger cars registered in the Netherlands last year, only 1.1 percent had a diesel engine. Diesels are doing much better on the second-hand market. In fact, with the exception of January and April, second-hand diesels were more popular than used electric cars on the sales platforms Gaspedal.nl and Autotrack in every month of 2023. This means – not entirely surprisingly – that throughout 2023, more people were searching for second-hand diesels than for used EVs on these sales sites.

Over the entire year of 2023, 8.7 percent of searches on Gaspedal.nl and Autotrack were for a used car with a diesel engine, while ‘only’ 7.55 percent of searches were for an electric used car. Traditional petrol cars were the most popular with a share of 56.5 percent in searches, followed by hybrid used cars with a petrol engine (23 percent). The share of LPG cars in searches was 2.1 percent for the whole of 2023 and remained very stable during the year. Diesel hybrids accounted for 1.3 percent of searches throughout 2023, used cars with an LPG power source accounted for 0.77 percent of searches. The share of diesel hybrids and cars with CNG engines hardly fluctuated during the year.

The average asking price of a used car offered on Gaspedal.nl and Autotrack was €23,828 last year. The average search query was thousands of euros below this at an average of €19,365. December was an outlier. Then the consumer kept their proverbial hand on their car and the average search price fell to €17,406.
