Sony and Honda have found each other. The two companies will develop electric cars under the name Sony Honda Mobility. Sony Honda Mobility’s first electric car will be an electric sedan called Afeela. The Afeela was shown in almost production-ready form during the CES in Las Vegas.

Sony has wanted to come up with an electric car for years. In 2020, the Japanese company showed off the Vision-S at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, clearly expressing its desire. In 2022, during the same technology fair, Sony presented a further developed variant of the Vision-S and a second study model, an SUV-like one called Vision-S 02. Later in 2022, Sony announced that it would join Honda in the electric car adventure. The Vision S and Vision S-02 made way for a first prototype from Afeela at the beginning of last year. Afeela has become the name of Sony Honda Mobility’s car brand and during the Consumer Electronics Show now taking place in Las Vegas, a more production-ready version of Afeela’s first EV was shown.

The electric sedan still looks very similar to the one shown last year, but it is really quite different. That starts with the dimensions. While the electric prototype was 4.9 meters long last year, this updated version has become 1.5 centimeters longer. The wheelbase is unchanged at 3 meters. We also now know more about the drivetrain. The electric Afeela has a 245 hp electric motor both front and rear. The battery pack is a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 91 kWh. Fast charging should be possible with a maximum of 150 kW.

Packed with screens.

There are also external novelties. Quite a lot actually. The headlights have been adjusted and are now positioned deeper in the nose. The screen between the headlights is new and the bumper work also seems ready for series production. This time, Afeela’s prototype has conventional side mirrors and a tailgate in the left front screen. The rear light section has also been made more concrete. Even more striking are the window styles. They are all thicker than the previous prototype and that indicates that this new model is a lot closer to reality.

The production version of this electric Afeela is planned for around 2026.
